Gum Shoe, a crypto influencer, has highlighted the long wait times and high fees at Coinbase compared to better service at Binance as evidence of the need for increased competition among U.S. crypto exchanges. This statement was made on X, formerly known as Twitter.

"I had to wait 3 hours for a Coinbase withdrawal to my SOL wallet," said Shoe. "support live chat took over 2 hours to reply to me after I paid $35K in fees just this past week. Binance gave me VIP support and a 2-minute wait time just because I have money there. Coinbase is just too expensive and that's not good for users."

The U.S. crypto market is increasingly demanding more competitive exchanges due to concerns over high fees and limited innovation. While Coinbase's user-friendly interface and regulatory compliance have established it as a dominant player domestically, critics argue that its fee structure—particularly for smaller trades—limits access and discourages frequent participation. This issue reflects broader debates about market concentration and the necessity for alternatives that better serve consumers. According to Investopedia, Binance—a leading exchange globally—offers significantly lower fees, highlighting an opportunity for U.S. exchanges with cost-efficient models to enter the market and expand consumer choice.

Quantitative comparisons reveal stark contrasts in fee structures: Binance’s standard spot trading fees are typically 0.10% (and can drop to 0.075% using BNB), while Coinbase charges up to 0.60% per transaction for retail users, according to CoinTelegraph.

Further analysis by CoinLedger shows Coinbase’s maker fees can reach 0.40% and taker fees up to 0.60% for volumes under $10,000, compared with Binance.US’s range of 0.011–0.38% and Binance.com’s flat 0.1% fee—making Coinbase substantially more expensive for the average consumer.

Gum Shoe has over 57,800 followers on X, demonstrating a strong presence within the crypto and web3 community. His account, active since July 2022, focuses on investment strategies, NFT projects, and discussions about the Solana ecosystem, making him a notable voice among digital asset enthusiasts.

While Coinbase brands itself as a trusted, compliant U.S. exchange, it has faced extensive criticism and regulatory scrutiny regarding its fee transparency and anti-money laundering (AML) practices. Users have described hidden spread fees as "obscene," with many finding it difficult to dispute charges A report by Reddit users noted that fees weren’t "clearly communicated," with some feeling "punished" by opaque pricing. Coinbase has also been fined millions by U.S. and UK regulators for AML failures, including a $50 million penalty from New York DFS in 2023 and £3.5 million from the UK’s FCA in July 2024.
