Paolo Savona, president of Consob | Consob

The Commissione Nazionale per le Società e la Borsa (Consob) announced it held a conference discussing the impact of crypto assets and the need to adapt regulatory frameworks to data science. The announcement was made in a press release on March 14, 2025.

According to Consob, the conference took place on March 14, 2024, at Bocconi University in Milan, marking the 50th anniversary of Italy’s financial markets regulator. The event focused on the impact of new elements such as digital finance, crypto assets, and the evolving regulatory framework amid global and European integration. It brought together experts, market operators, and regulators to discuss the challenges posed by these developments, including competition between different jurisdictions.

Consob Chairman Paolo Savona called for monitoring the new world of crypto assets and currencies. He suggested that instead of incorporating "data science," "artificial intelligence," and "decentralized accounting" into the old regulatory framework, it would be necessary to incorporate the old system into data science. Savona emphasized that the impact of cryptocurrencies goes beyond the monetary sphere and affects broader financial markets.

This conference is part of a series of events celebrating Consob’s 50th anniversary. Last October, a seminar at Rome’s La Sapienza University reviewed the regulator's history. According to Consob, the anniversary celebrations will conclude on June 20, 2024, with the Annual Meeting at the Milan Stock Exchange, where discussions on the future of the financial market will continue.

The Commissione Nazionale per le Società e la Borsa (Consob) is Italy’s financial market regulator responsible for ensuring transparency and proper conduct among financial operators to protect the integrity of the financial system and safeguard investors. It monitors compliance with financial regulations, prevents misconduct, and takes action when necessary. Consob ensures that investors have access to accurate information for informed investment decisions while promoting efficiency in financial trading.
