Changpeng Zhao, founder of Binance, said that a move for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to count bitcoin as a mortgage asset signals a shift in the American Dream. The statement was made on X.

“This is great to see, BTC count as assets for mortgage,” said Zhao. “The current American Dream is to own a home. The future American Dream will be to own 0.1 BTC, which will be more than the value of a house in the US.”

Recent U.S. government actions indicate a potential policy shift in mortgage lending. According to Business Insider, the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) has directed Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to draft plans allowing cryptocurrency assets—if held on U.S.-regulated exchanges—to be counted in single-family mortgage assessments. This initiative marks the first time federally backed mortgage institutions may accept digital assets, reflecting a growing recognition of crypto’s financial role. The move is part of broader debates on digital asset regulation, amid both optimism for broader homeownership and concerns over crypto volatility.

The U.S. homeownership rate was 65.1% in the first quarter of 2025, representing a slight decline from recent years. As reported by the Federal Reserve Economic Data, the average sale price of new single-family homes climbed to $522,200 in May 2025. This value reflects ongoing pressures in the housing market, including inflation and constrained supply, underscoring persistent affordability challenges for American buyers.

According to SmartValor, Bitcoin’s value has skyrocketed by over 3,100% in the past five years, while U.S. median home prices saw a much slower annual growth of 3–5%. The median U.S. home price is now around $412,100 and has dropped from roughly 59 BTC in 2017 to just 11 BTC by 2022. This trend highlights the volatility and rapid gains seen in crypto relative to traditional assets.

Forbes reports that Changpeng Zhao, commonly known as CZ, is a visionary entrepreneur who founded Binance in 2017 and quickly grew it into the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume. He is widely recognized for his leadership in advancing blockchain technology and promoting financial inclusion globally, making him one of the most influential figures in the crypto industry. Zhao’s innovative strategies and commitment to expanding crypto accessibility have earned him a reputation as a pioneer in digital finance.
