According to CNBC, large-scale Bitcoin acquisitions among U.S. public companies have accelerated since 2020, with firms like Strategy and Tesla buying significant Bitcoin reserves as a hedge against inflation and to diversify treasury assets. This trend has driven increased institutional acceptance of Bitcoin and prompted closer regulatory attention, reflecting the cryptocurrency’s growing legitimacy in corporate finance.
According to Strategy’s investor relations, as of July 2024, the company holds approximately 226,331 Bitcoin acquired at a total cost of about $8.33 billion, with the current market value now exceeding $13 billion following Bitcoin’s price appreciation. Strategy remains the world’s largest public company holder of Bitcoin, regularly disclosing ongoing purchases.
As reported by CoinGecko, Strategy’s Bitcoin holdings are far larger than other public companies, with Tesla holding roughly 10,500 Bitcoin and Coinbase about 9,500 as of mid-2024. Although funds like Grayscale control more Bitcoin overall, Strategy’s direct ownership and investment scale make it unique among corporate players globally.
